Nike, Adidas and Puma Plans to Remove Toxic Rubbish by Detox

Greenpeace continuous campaigns is finally paying off! Three largest Sports Apparels Nike, Puma and Adidas are determined to remove their hazardous chemical waste to all their factories by 2020.

One of Greenpeace's Dirty Laundry Campaign have identified several clothing sports giants are the causes of toxic pollution of about 300-500 tonnes of heavy metals, solvents and toxic sludge in China's Yangtze River. 

The after effect of these campaigns is that some clothing companies are making changes like cleaning up their production waste.

Greenpeace have organized campaigns like "Strip Offs " in 29 cities around the world.In which activist pretends to model the clothing line and acts as if its removing themselves with those toxic clothes.

Green peace found nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) in clothing from 14 brands: Abercombie & Fitch, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Converse, G-Star RAW, H&M, Kappa, Lacoste, Li Ning, Nike, Puma, Ralph Lauren, Uniqlo and Youngor. Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) has dangerous ,continuing and hormone-disrupting properties.

The process maybe slow and tedious but we are making one good step for the benefit of our environment.According to Adidas in regards to an industry wide effort for a toxic free waste industry.

“We believe there needs to be an industry-wide approach and that’s why we’re trying to get together as a group,” an Adidas spokeswoman told BusinessGreen. “We’ve already had first discussions with other brands and we’ve been in constant dialogue in the last couple of weeks.”

There are a lot of things you can recycle besides cans, bottles and cardboard if you just let your creative mind work. Most of the stuff lying around can be recycled if we just do our share.

 Bras 

 You might find it funny but there is a recycling company called Bra Recyclers that buy and sell bras for a business. They have exporters and organization worldwide to help qualified women with used or unused bra as they stand up to self reliance.

Make sure the bras are in good condition, especially the clasp and straps are working. They also accept new bras and keep the tags on to indicate that they are new.

Most shoes worn out after 500 miles but many are still usable  There are many companies that recycle shoes such as NIKE that will make your old shoe new again or reUSE  it. Hair can be recycled too. Locks of Love is a non profit organization that gives hairpieces to children suffering related to hair growth. Their goal is to provide self confidence for disadvantage children.


Cd's

Most of us have Cd's lying around. Re purpose them to create shinny decorations in the living room and garden. You can create dumbbells, lampshades,blinds and even a chair.

H&M Recycle Clothes and Gives Cash

Do you have some old clothes lying around  to be recycled? Or a closet full of clothes that you don't use anymore. Now is the time to pack it in a bag and earn a voucher for hoarding.

H &M will be starting their own garment recycling program for all their Canadian stores and they need your help.I hope they will expand their recycling to all their branches.

The collected clothes are then handled by H&M’s partner, I:Collect, which provides the infrastructure in which consumer goods are repeatedly reprocessed and made available for new use."

“Our sustainability efforts are rooted in a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. We want to do good for the environment, which is why we are now offering our customers a convenient solution: to be able to leave their worn out or defective garments with H&M,” stated H&M CEO Karl-Johan Persson.

How To Make A Compost from Food Waste

One of the best techniques to stock food waste before transferring  to the compost bin is by using a tightly sealed kitchen compost pail or you can also use any plastic container with lid.

Place this near the kitchen so that you can easily transfer your food waste into the pail. Try to transfer the contents of your compost container when its full or when the is a foul odor coming from the food waste. You can also cover the container with paper or newspaper to reduce the smell or gnats.

Transfer the collected food waste from your container to a much larger bucket .Wash the pail and be ready for the next batch of kitchen waste. A 4-5 gallon container is appropriate for  this. Check out your nearest junk shop or hardware store. 

Make sure the bucket is accessible from your kitchen so that you can easily empty your food waste.  

One of the best solutions for fruit flies or gnats from going over to your bins is to cover the lid with newspaper and also reduces the smell that is coming out from your compost.  Make sure to change the newspaper when it gets damp and falls apart.

Household Increase Recycling Rates After Council Stops Weekly Collections

Waste Collection London-Homeowners are encouraged to further strengthen their recycling efforts because councils will only be removing their waste every fortnight.
The Department for the Environment , Food and Rural Affairs predicts that for the first time, there will be an increase in recycling than garbage being dump on dump sites.

Local Councils in England have recycled,reduced and reused about 10.7 million tons of garbage that were gathered, rather than being transferred to landfills.
The data shows that, in the 10 councils, the biggest improvements were due to the fortnight waste gathering and food waste recycle in the period of two years of implementation.

A fortnight collection and a different food recycling day has brought the success in Cheltenham Borough Council from 35 percent to 46 percent in a span of one year.
The second largest in London is Borough of Newham which uses rubbish collection and does not gather food waste.

Councils have already increased their guidelines from 15 to 23 percent recycling rate. Ministers have been campaigning to councils recycling efforts from dropping weekly collections.

Advocates have been been encouraging household to recycle more because garbage bins cannot hold enough waste in the span of 14 days. 

Doretta Cocks, founder of the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collection, told The Daily Telegraph: “The idea of reducing frequency of residual waste collection is that people are forced to recycle by the lack of capacity in residual waste bins.

“This is a far speedier way of changing attitudes than education which is costly and time-consuming. Unfortunately the end result is contamination of recycling materials.

“Residents are rarely asked whether they are happy with reduced frequency - if they are surveyed they are presented with the option of weekly collections with the most exaggerated costs quoted.”

A Defra spokesman said: “Across the country, people are cutting the amount of waste going to landfill by recycling more. They are not only protecting the environment, but fueling a growing industry that reuses the things they throw away.

“More still needs to be done and we continue to push towards our aim of a zero waste economy, with businesses, councils and householders all doing their bit.”


Local Government minister Brandon Lewis told The Daily Telegraph: “Research shows that residents overwhelmingly prefer a regular and frequent rubbish collection, but under the previous administration the numbers of weekly services across the country halved while council tax doubled.

“Cutting the frequency of collections is a lazy and unnecessary move. It is possible to increase recycling and still have comprehensive weekly service, through better procurement, more joint working and using incentive schemes.”

"When it comes to recycling, it's an afterthought," said Kao, 55, who has also founded two software companies. "All the energy is going to how do we get the next revenue from the new best gadget, and there is never a thought to how to get it back."
While Green Citizen is trying to offset gadget waste, Kao said it still isn't a match for a consumer culture that encourages people to seek the latest and greatest technology. About 80 percent of U.S. electronic waste ends up on container ships and then ditched in developing countries, where companies hire workers to extract the core minerals without any environmental or worker-safety oversight, he said.

"It's going to get worse and worse," Kao said. "Initially I tried to fight it, but you can't."

West Sussex Begins Used Oil Recycling

Waste Clearance London-West Sussex County Council and its waste and recycling partner Viridor have join with renewable energy company Living Fuels LTD to assist homeowners in  recycling their used cooking oil for energy use.

Citizens of West Sussex will be able to pour their cooking oil in collection tanks in nine household waste recycling centers (HWRC ) beginning this Christmas. There are already several collections tanks in 14 of East Sussex HWRC. 

After the oil is collected, it is brought to Living Fuels recovery plan and process to become a bio-liquid called LF100.

The LF 100 then is then used for the sister company Living Power for  heat and power plants as a source of carbon neutral energy to provide the national grid for emergency power.

Bill Griffiths, Viridor’s National Recycling Manager, said: “Help make this year’s Christmas a greener one, and bring your cooking oil to one of the household waste recycling sites that are offering the service.

“The best thing to do is for people to put the used oil in plastic bottles, so we can recycle the container as well.

“Why not make the most of the journey by bringing along any other recyclable items left over from the festive season.”
Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council’s Deputy Leader, with responsibility for waste and recycling, said that the county’s recycling rates could be boosted if more people recycled their cooking oil.

He said: “In the UK, we are at the forefront of new technology with respect to recycling, which is illustrated with our excellent overall recycling rate of 44 per cent in West Sussex.

“However, we’re always looking for new things for people to recycle to help push this figure even higher, so are really pleased to be launching the service.”

Rob Murphy, Operations Director at Living Fuels, added: "Turning cooking oil into a chemical-free bioliquid results in higher levels of energy recovery than manufacturing carbon-hungry biodiesel, making our process the most sustainable use of waste vegetable oil.

He added: “[A]s well as providing a valuable source of renewable energy, recycling cooking oil can also help prevent it ending up in the sewerage network.”

British Love Food Hate Waste Campaign During the Holidays

During the annual Christmas celebration, British household will always end up with exorbitant amount of excess food. We do our shopping, dining and the rest of it goes to the bins. Most of the food we throw can still be eaten to help in our conservation efforts to protect our food sources and improve our financial independence during hard times.

In a recent statistics by Love Food Hate Waste, they estimated that we throw around 2 million turkeys, 5 million Christmas puddings and 74 million mince pie.

A regular British family spends £169 and 35% of the food that they  prepare are thrown away as garbage.With this amount of waste, Love Food Hate Waste has and Unilever will try to assist 12 families in UK to reduce their waste ans spending during the holiday season. The goal is to reduce waste by 25% and their grocery bill by 15%.

Kathy Cope, a 39-year-old mother of two who lives in Woolton Village, Liverpool, is taking part in the challenge. She says, "Christmas is definitely the most wasteful time of year for us. I overbuy because I want everything to be perfect. It's hard to get portions right and I don't want to appear stingy so I always cook far more than I need to."


Britons also poured 15 millions cups of roast turkey fat in the kitchen sink that could fill an Olympic size swimming pool.


A research conducted by University of Portsmouth showed an additional of £50m a year on household bills to clear sewers of turkey fats as it becomes hard and soapy material.

As for me who has allergic rhinitis, dust and other allergens should never be allowed in my room. I should keep my room clean every day or else, sneezing and watery eyes will get in my way. I don’t want to spend the entire day sneezing because of the accumulated dust in my room. If your kids have allergies or asthma, you should be keeping your home clean or you’ll be spending some of your budget on hospital bills and medicine.

No more whole day cleanups

If you keep your home clean daily, you don’t have to spend the entire weekend for cleanups. You can go on outing or do some bonding activities with your family. Spending a couple of minutes on wiping the tabletops and sweeping the floor will save you an entire weekend. So, don’t wait for your chores to pile up.

Recycling, can be done in different ways. I used materials from silver tools and recyclined it into Silver handicraft. Another way is when rubbish from our daily lives is used by industry later on transforming it into energy and other new products. Another way is when clothes etc is given away to second hand shops for people to buy instsead of that it all would have been thrown away.  

In march this year it was time for Earth Hour. Some of us joined the circle of non electricity users for an hour but afterwards.............most of us turned electricity on again. I know many of us want to care more about the planet and act in a more proper ecological way. The problem many times is that we are court in our habits and have a hard time changing them.

I believe  that changing the way of using the planet resources is primary based on an inner decision of creating a more holistic and ecological way of acting in daily activities. Its also important to choose a start point that is suitable for managing the first step. Its impossible to change all at once, the point is to decide one step that you know you will manage, and then try it. Go to action!

1. Start walking to work instead of using the car - do it 2-3 times a week as a start.



2. Turn of the computer at lunch break at home or/and at work, - do it 2-3 times a week as a start.



3. Buy ecological fruit instead of other - start with bananas, kiwi as the non ecological kiwi and bananas are FULL of sh_t and people working with these non eco fruits get sick and die!



4. Turn into ecological choises of coffee and tea - as the non ecological choises are FULL of shit and people working with this non eco kind of coffee and tea get sick and die!

Dear friend - start with one or maybe two things to change - feel richer when you make change. Maybe after a while you add some friends into your eco-circle and after a while it grows into a great eco-unit.

Recycling Your Children's Crayons

As a child we love crayons so much. We love its color and how it makes our drawing beautiful. Crayons can give life to the drawings no matter how ugly it is. One color of your crayons can make your drawings alive. But when it break and turn into small little crayon and we don’t use it anymore. We think it’s no use and then we buy a new one. 



Here’s good news, now It can be recycle.Crayons can be recycle  and turn to become new again. In US they collect the broken, unused crayons to send to the National Crayon Recycle Program Facebook page, which recycles old crayons and makes new ones. The recycling program so far has collected more than 81,000 pounds of crayons. They only not accept crayons which are made outside the states due to questions about the ingredients.

This would be a fun, fantastic and worthwhile project for schools where children use crayons in their school work. 

This is a good move to make the student become fully aware of their social responsibility. To recycle and reuse their things which they think is of no use to them. They can also share and give to the less fortunate their stuff which they no longer used.

They say children is the Hope of the World. Everytime I see Severn Susuki in Youtube, the girl who silenced the world in 5 minutes delivers her message I always ended up crying. I cry because I will be leaving the world to my children a World in destruction.

 Once again I cried, not for Severn speech but for Abby Goldberg, a 12 year old who secured 170,000 plus signatures for a  gubernatorial veto on her Change.org petition "Don't Let Big Plastic Bully Me!" which opposes a bill to required plastic bag manufacturers to set up recycling programs, but at the expense of municipal liberties to ban plastic bags altogether.

“I'm 12, so I've gotten that reaction: ‘She's 12, what can she do?'" Abby previously explained to the Chicago Sun-Times. "You can make a difference no matter how old you are."

The grayslake resident was surprised by Governor Pat Quinn last Saturday that he supported her petition.

"I was so excited," the Prairie Crossing Charter School eighth-grader told the Chicago Tribune Sunday. "I thanked him so many times."

The proposed law would have required manufacturers to set up recycling clearance programs, and set a goal to increase the recycling rate by 12 percent by 2015,but it would hinder retail stores to using only registered manufacturers' products and ban local municipalities from enacting their own plastic bag laws.

On Sunday, Quinn formally vetoed the proposed law, saying that it limited local municipalities and pushing back against claims from the Illinois Manufacturers Association that called the bill an opportunity for Illinois to become a national leader in recycling Rubbish Clearance London

Having everything you need is really a gift that you should be thankful for. There are many people in the world that lives with less and still work hard to fill their needs. Being a person who lives with abundance you should share your blessings to others who are less fortunate.

Sharing to others what you have even big or small is a big help to them. As a citizen in this world it is your social responsibility to help. It gives a feeling of happiness that no money can buy.

Gary Cheney an independent insurance broker is a resident of Lenox who was once inspired on how to share their blessings to others. He is now the chairman of the New Lenox ShareFest organization. The organization focuses much of its attention on recycling and reuse but also has a collective eye trained on assisting senior citizens, feeding the hungry and preserving green space.

"When our family comes together-religion and politics are often a topic of discussion, "Cheney said. "One Thanksgiving back in '06, we were gathering as a family and there were a number of things in the world that had happened."

"One of our daughters brought up the question and said, 'What would you do to solve that? What would you do if you had all the money in the world?' It went around the table. 


Then, somebody said, 'Well, if I had all the money in the world, I would start a TV show or a news show and it would only be about good news.'

"People are beat up with all of the chaos that is going on. That's when that voice came to and said, 'It's time.' 

"That night he start to conceptualize the birth of his now Share Fest organization. It's been six years and they are still continuing doing their objectives."

"I see it as taking responsibility to do what I feel I've been called to do," he said. "That takes going out and making relationships to get it done. It's not me, really. You need to consider all of the people involved. We have 70 organizations involved in Share Fest."

They also encouraged everyone in the community to donate old clothing or used books. All of the items will be collected and recycled or redistributed, thanks to the work of Cheney's Share Fest team. This item will be distributed to the less fortunate children. This will also lessen their problem in their mounting rubbish clearance. 


"Well, first of all, the township and I am personally committed to recycling," Bill McCollum New Lenox Township Supervisor said. 

"As we know, it's a problem with the landfills. They're filling up all too quickly. And I think the EPA and others have taken the initiative that we need to be doing something better with these materials.

New Law Requires Businesses To Promote Recycling

Since July 1, California State law mandates businesses to provide and implement recycling methods.

  

- Any business that generates 4 cubic yards or more of waste per week; and

- Multi-Family dwellings with five or more units.

California State law requires apartment owners to offer recycling services at residents' request. Apartment owners may require tenants to recycle. Businesses and Multi-Family communities that meet the threshold must recycle at the place of work or jobsite.

With this new law passed here are some suggestions where to recycle your rubbish.
